Custom domains (TenaBill)
Host your customer portal or billing pages at your own domain (e.g. portal.yourcompany.com) instead of a tenabill.com subdomain. You don't need any technical background to set this up — you just need access to wherever you manage your domain's DNS (usually the company you bought the domain from, like GoDaddy, Namecheap, Cloudflare, or Google Domains).
Console: TenaBill merchant console → Settings → Custom domains (/settings/custom-domains)
What you'll need
- A domain or subdomain you own (e.g.
yourcompany.com). - Login access to that domain's DNS settings. This is normally found in your domain registrar's website, under a section called "DNS," "DNS management," or "DNS records" — not in TenaBill.
We recommend using a subdomain like portal.yourcompany.com rather than your bare root domain (yourcompany.com), since the root domain is usually already in use for your main website or email.
Step-by-step setup
- In TenaBill, go to Settings → Custom domains and click Add a domain.
- Type the hostname you want to use, e.g.
portal.yourcompany.com, and click Add domain. - TenaBill shows you a DNS TXT record — a record type, a name/host value, and a value. Use the copy buttons next to each so you don't have to retype anything by hand.
- Open your domain's DNS settings at your registrar (outside of TenaBill) and add a new record:
- Type:
TXT - Name / Host: paste the exact value TenaBill gave you
- Value: paste the exact value TenaBill gave you Save the record. Every registrar's screen looks a little different, but they all ask for these same three things.
- Type:
- Wait for the change to take effect. This is called "DNS propagation" and normally takes a few minutes, but can take up to a few hours depending on your provider.
- Back in TenaBill, click Re-check verification next to your domain. TenaBill also checks automatically every 5 minutes on its own, so if you're not in a hurry you can just leave the page and check back later.
- When verification succeeds, the domain's status changes to Verified and it starts serving your portal.
If you need to see the DNS record again later — for example, you added the domain, closed the tab, and came back the next day — click View DNS record next to that domain in the domain list. You don't need to delete and re-add the domain to see it again.
Understanding the status badge
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Pending | Domain added, TXT record not yet found. This is normal right after adding a domain, before DNS has propagated. |
| Verifying | TenaBill is actively checking for the record. |
| Verified | The TXT record was found and matched — the domain is live. |
| Failed | TenaBill checked and couldn't find a matching record. See troubleshooting below. |
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| Status stuck on Pending after an hour or more | DNS propagation can occasionally take longer than expected — try Re-check verification again after a few more hours. If it's still pending after 24 hours, double-check the record was actually saved at your registrar. |
| Status shows Failed | Click View DNS record and compare it character-for-character with what's saved at your registrar — a common cause is a typo, an extra space, or the registrar automatically appending your domain name to the "Name/Host" field (some registrars want just the first part of the name, others want the full name — if unsure, try both). |
| "Enter a valid hostname" error when adding a domain | Enter just the hostname, e.g. portal.yourcompany.com — don't include https:// or a trailing slash. |
| Not sure where to add a DNS record | Search "[your registrar name] add TXT record" — most registrars (GoDaddy, Namecheap, Cloudflare, Google Domains) have a short help article for this exact step. |
Removing a domain
Click Delete next to a domain to remove it. This takes effect immediately — the domain stops serving your portal right away. If you add the same domain again later, you'll need to verify the DNS record again.
